July 23, 2022

What is a leather weave?

Leather weaving is the process of interweaving multiple strands of leather in a symmetrical fashion to create unique patterns for use in the home and arts. It can be done in various ways to create complex and varied visual patterns. Because it has different shapes and thicknesses, it can be used in many types of leather products. And leather weaving is most often used for personal accessories and home decor.

Characteristics of woven leather

The characteristics of woven leather, depending on how it is processed, can be waterproof, turn green with age, alternate light, and dark strips, stretch or provide shock absorption, and can last longer if properly cared for.

Types of leather weave

Basket Weaving: Traditionally, basket weaving involves placing two strips of leather horizontally, two strips vertically, and so on, with each strip crossing over two strips. Leather baskets can be very decorative without the rigidity of wicker or other more substantial materials. The basket weave pattern is used more for flat trim pieces or soft-edged items like wallets.

Braided Leather Bracelets: Braided leather bracelets are usually braided or finished with braided ends. The finished end braided bracelet usually ends with a snap or magnetic device attached to each end. Braided bracelets typically have ends glued and pressed into pairs of fittings used to join the ends together.

Even a simple leather fabric has many different ways and types to turn it into something more beautiful, and, after some weaving of the leather, it becomes a very interesting and unique leather crafting technique.

Best of all, leather woven items look beautiful and can last for years if properly cared for.
